Top 10 Toxic Ingredients In Most Protein Powders...Are They In Yours?


For years I was in search of a protein powder that passed my "label test" and that simultaneously made my body feel good after eating it. I spent hours reading and searching at the health foods store and online. I was surprised at how hard it was to find a product, even at the health foods store, that even passed my "label test!"

I tried out a couple brands that were as close to my standard as I could find, but never could find one that REALLY made me feel good (more on this in a minute...). 

Sadly, there are SO many protein powders out there that are marketed as healthy, when they are far from it. 

Some of the common ingredients in many brands that you should be aware of, and make sure to avoid include: 

1. Soy Protein (both concentrate or isolate)

     Nearly all of the soy protein produced and consumed in the States is genetically modified and is contaminated with the incredibly toxic herbicide glyphosate (aka Roundup). Soy protein isolate is even worse, as the processing it undergoes to get to this isolated state results in a protein that is very denatured, which causes serious hormone disruption due primarily to the high estrogen content it contains. 

2. Isolated (Plant) Proteins

     Most plant proteins are considered to be "healthier" because they come from a plant. However, most plant based sources of protein are far from whole, healthy sources of protein. This is due to the fact that they are often chemical and/or heat treated, and undergo highly unnatural processes to result in an isolated protein.

     The resulting plant protein is typically also denatured, and is devoid of the nutritional co-factors your body requires to properly digest and use the protein, which ultimately leads to deficiencies and lack of optimal health. 

     Brown rice protein is a plant based protein that also is typically very contaminated with the heavy metal arsenic, which is very toxic to human health

3. Any Protein ISOLATES

     Whether it be plant based, whey, or anything in between, NO protein isolates are truly healthy and nourishing because protein isn't meant to be consumed in a completely isolated state. First, to get to an isolated state requires unhealthy processing methods that make your food unhealthy, even if it's coming from a very good source.  

     Second, nature intended for certain nutrients to be eaten together with your protein. Extracting and isolating out the protein and consuming it in that state puts a great deal of stress on the body. It then has to leach nutrients from other body tissues to be able to properly digest the isolated protein. This causes nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, and more. ALWAYS get a concentrated protein, aka the "whole food" form to ensure you're getting the spectrum of nutrients you need. 

4. Refined Sugar

     Avoiding or significantly reducing added sugar is key for health and optimal functioning, ESPECIALLY from refined sugar. Refined sugar adds zero nutritional value and detracts from health and function. Different forms of processed sugars are added to many protein products to make the nasty, highly processed protein more palatable. If you see ingredients such as corn syrup solids, fructose, maltodextrin, dextrose, or sugar, avoid that product! 

5. Artificial Sweeteners

     Because many brands know that people want to keep their sugars low, they got a little sneaky and added highly toxic artificial sweeteners to improve the taste and sweetness of their product. If you see ingredients such as Acesulfame Potassium, Ace-K, or Sucralose don't consume that product! These awful sugar substitutes increase appetite, kill neurons (brain cells), increase cravings, promote weight gain, and cause cancer.

6. Erythritol & Other "Healthy" Sugar Alternatives

     To make erythritol most manufacturers start with genetically engineered (GMO) corn and put it through a complex fermentation process to come up with chemically pure erythritol. Sugar alcohols like this can harm healthy gut bacteria and function, which leads to a whole host of diseases and if you’re trying to lose weight or stay slim, keeping your gut healthy is vital! Erythritol is also known to cause diarrhea and stomach upset.

     Other similar "healthy" sugar alternatives that are poorly processed and quite unhealthy include xylitol, truvia, luo han go, and even some of the conventional monk fruit extracts.  

7. Carrageenan

     This thickener and emulsifier is widely known to cause digestive problems and intestinal inflammation. It’s also linked to cancer, as tests have found as much as 25% degraded carrageenan in “food-grade carrageenan” (the kind used in protein powder and other foods). Degraded carrageenan is classified as “Possibly carcinogenic to humans” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

8. Cellulose

     This anti-caking agent and thickener is usually made from wood, because it’s cheap. In particular, it leads to inflammation and digestive problems.

9. Vegetable Oils

     Refined vegetable oils like soybean oil, canola oil, and sunflower oil are added to many protein powders as a defoaming and thickening agent. These oils go through an insane amount of processing with chemical solvents, steamers, neutralizers, de-waxers, bleach and deodorizers, and unless organic, are extracted with the neurotoxin hexane – it’s literally bathed in it.

     Vegetable oils are incredibly pro-inflammatory, and cause a number of health issues, including heart disease. The oils should be avoided at all costs!

10. Synthetic Vitamins

     Vitamins that are made in a lab are not healthy, and are not the same as naturally-occurring vitamins! Lab-produced vitamins are made from a variety of sources like coal tar, petroleum or GMOs. Synthetic vitamins aren't absorbed by your body as well as natural vitamins that you get from whole food. You’ll see these listed on the ingredient list like: Vitamin A Palmitate and Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C). The best way to get vitamins is from REAL food!

Like I was talking about at the beginning, it was nearly impossible for me to find a protein powder that passed my "label test" and that made my body feel good (not only not make me feel bad, but actually made me feel GOOD)...
