The Mighty Benefits of Magnesium

While every mineral in our bodies are vital to our overall health and wellbeing, some consider magnesium to be the most important mineral in our body, as it plays so many important roles. Along with potassium, magnesium is the most prevalent mineral in our cells, which is evidence of its great importance to our health.  About sixty percent of all the magnesium in our bodies is found in the bones, then about 26 percent in the muscle, and the rest being in the soft tissue and body fluids. Magnesium works closely with calcium and phosphorus in maintaining healthy bones and tissues. Magnesium helps to build bones and helps to prevent tooth decay by holding the calcium in the tooth enamel.

Magnesium has the ability to activate many enzymes. This is a very important trait of magnesium because without enzymes, we would quickly die. Everything our bodies do relies on different enzymes, from our ability to digest food, to breathe, or to move all relies on enzymatic reactions. So having enough magnesium to activate these enzymes is significant.

One of the most important roles of magnesium is its ability to help muscles relax. When calcium comes into a muscle cell, the muscle contracts. Then, when calcium leaves and magnesium replaces it, the muscle then relaxes. So, when magnesium is deficient, muscle spasms, tremors, and other such problems can be experienced. Magnesium has been used for its muscular relaxing abilities to help treat the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia.

Like the electrolyte potassium, magnesium helps to maintain the electrical charge of the cells, which is of great importance for healthy functioning muscles and nerves. Furthermore, scientific studies are linking magnesium intake with a reduction in inflammation and inflammatory conditions, including cardiovascular disease.

Because of magnesium's ability to improve the muscle tone of the blood vessels, which helps to lower blood pressure, cardiovascular disease is even further protected against. Magnesium helps to relax muscles, which includes the heart, which helps to prevent heart attack and angina (caused by a spasm of the muscles in the blood vessels that go to the heart). Interestingly, those that die of a heart attack have shown to have very low levels of magnesium

Additionally, magnesium is involved in many cellular functions such as producing energy, the making of protein, menstrual problems and in cellular reproduction. Magnesium also helps calcium to be more soluble in the urine, which helps to prevent stone formation.

Some of the main symptoms of magnesium deficiency include mental confusion, irritability, weakness, heart disturbances, muscle cramps, headaches, loss of appetite, insomnia, and problems with nerve conduction and muscle contractions. Women who are menstruating are much more likely to be deficient in magnesium. Other factors that lead to magnesium deficiency include high calcium intake, alcohol consumption, surgery, use of diuretics, liver or kidney disease, or oral contraceptive use.

Most people do not get nearly the recommended amount of magnesium in their diets, and coupled with ever increasingly nutrient depleted soils, we are seeing a society that is becoming chronically deficient in magnesium. Magnesium is found primarily in whole foods, and is practically non-existant in processed foods.

Some of the top food sources for magnesium include raw cacao, kelp, raw nuts and seeds, coconut meat, brown rice, dark leafy greens, figs, and apricots.

We believe that one of the most powerful superfood sources of magnesium, antioxidants and other important minerals critical for optimal levels of health is beyond organically grown 100% pure heirloom Criollo Raw Cacao that has been properly fermented and sundried. We believe that instead of ingesting supplement pills of just magnesium, a superior option is to ingest a whole superfood source known to be the richest in magnesium and other critical vitamins and minerals needed to help absorb and assimilate magnesium in a much more efficient way.
